Gas explosion rocks factory in East London
An explosion at the Feltex Automotive Trim factory in the East London Industrial Development Zone injured 11 people on 3 October 2017. The incident occurred at 21h45 and according to Chief fire officer Thembile Thompson of Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) Fire and Rescue Services, was caused by gases that ignited. 15 fire fighters from BCMM Fire and Rescue Services, 13 personnel from BCMM Emergency Medical Services, 10 officers from East London South African Police Service and personnel from private ambulance services attended the scene. “Three major pumpers were dispatched and the fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, with damping down operations continuing thereafter,” said Chief Thompson. Damage costs are estimated at R5 million. Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion is underway.
